, and says the investigation is very much alive. tonight the family of the mission child, kevin collins, is reacting to a major development in this highly publicized cold case. let's bring in nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney with the details. terry? >> reporter: a lot of people have been following the disappearance of kevin collins for many years. tonight i spoke with steven collins, kevin's brother. he said he has seen many breakthroughs over the years, but this one looks like the real thing. this is the person of interest in the disappearance of kevin collins. this is man san francisco police knew mostly as wayne jackson. he had at least four aliases, and that's what threw police off his trail. >> based on jackson's description, his residence on masonic avenue, his ownership of a large black dog, and his criminal history, we are investigating jackson as a person of interest in this case. >> reporter: jackson was 6 feet tall, blond, and had a black dog, just like the person last seen talking to collins in february of 1984 at masonic and oak streets in san francisco. jackson lived on maso

of the most high profile missing child cases, the 1994 disappearance of 10-year-old kevin collins. 1984, excuse me. today police release ed stunnin new details about a man that's dead they're calling a person of interest. nbc bay area's arturo santiago joins us with the new information on this cold case. arturo? >> reporter: raj, investigators do now have a new person of interest in the case of kevin collins who disappeared in 1984. the problem is this person of interest has been dead for more than five years. >> ai appreciate the fact we're still working on this. >> reporter: police are referring to this new person of interest as wayne jackson. although he's used a total of five different aliases and in 2008 he died of natural causes under the name of dan therrien. >> this case is a case that haunts the san francisco police department and the city of san francisco and has pretty much throughout the entire career of everybody that's standing here. >> reporter: new members of the cold case unit had recently been reviewing the case and while reviewing notes on an old interview with jackso

say they have new information in the kevin collins cold case and plan to release that information at 2:30 this afternoon. you'll remember collins was last seen leaving his school in the haight-ashbury neighborhood in february of 1984. he was 10 years old at the time. of course we'll be at today's police briefing and have the very latest on nbc bay area news at 5:00. >>> palo alto police this morning still looking for a man who tried to grab an 11-year-old girl. they say the man looks like this, and he attempted to grab that girl on monday as she rode past him on her bike. that girl did tell police she was on emerson street when that man attempted to grab her. the good news is she was able to get away and she got home safely. >> sweeping changes that will affect your mail. today the postmaster general announcing that starting in august the post office plans to stop delivering mail on saturdays. nbc bay area's bob redell is live at the post office in downtown san jose with reaction from today's decision. this is interesting. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. yes
